Around Hotel Verviers there is plenty of nature. A twenty-minute drive away you will find the oldest natural park in Wallonia: High Fens-Eifel. This park is nicknamed the 'Savannah of the Ardennes'. The Signal of Botrange, the highest peak in Belgium, is also a half-hour drive from the hotel. Here you can - if enough snow has fallen - cross-country ski or even ski.
Cycling is, of course, possible all year round. Reserve an electric or regular mountain bike and take to the forest trails at a brisk speed. Don't mind getting mud splattered on your clothes, because you're guaranteed to get a little dirty during such a challenging ride through the muddy trails. At the reception of Hotel Verviers they will help you choose the most beautiful routes. Along lakes, rivers, mills and even to the Drielandenpunt near Vaals. From here you can go in all directions. Recommended is route Line 38: one of the most beautiful green roads in Belgium. It refers to an old railroad line that you can now follow by bike.
You must not be afraid of heights
If you want something different from following the well-known hiking trail, spend a day at Forestia. This park houses a zoo, playground, adventure park and high ropes course in the middle of the forest. In this adventure climbing forest, you walk across ladders, bridges and ropes. Like an animal, you move through, between and through the trees. There are eleven courses and two zip lines for various ages and levels. Climb over all the obstacles, find your balance and overcome your fear of heights.
At least you shouldn't be afraid of heights when you go skydiving. At Skydive Spa, Belgium's largest parachute center, spring you will descend from a plane from a great height with an instructor. For no less than 45 seconds you make a free fall, after which the parachute opens and you calmly descend to the ground. Meanwhile, you admire the beautiful region from above, at least if you don't close your eyes with excitement. Who dares to take the big leap?
This region is of course famous for Formula 1. A short distance from the hotel is the city of Spa with the famous circuit of Spa-Francorchamps. This is considered by many drivers to be the most beautiful race track in the world. A must-see therefore! It is an authentic circuit that follows the natural slopes of the landscape. If there is no race, you can walk around the circuit with a guide and take a look at the pit lane. Those who want to race themselves can go to the largest indoor kart track in Europe in Verviers. From action you can at once move on to relaxation, because Spa is also known for its wellness. In the thermal baths of Spa you can fully enjoy baths with natural mineral water. This historic spa town is surrounded by greenery and is also included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
You can also relax your muscles at Hotel Verviers. Relax in the wellness area with sauna and hammam that is open daily from seven in the morning until ten in the evening. There is also an outdoor pool in the beautiful garden where you can enjoy a swim from May until the end of September. And don't forget to check out the monumental hotel building. This was once Verviers-East station, with also an adjacent customs building, which was an important place for Belgian exports. The town used to be best known for its textile industry. From here, among other things, wool went around the world by train. In Verviers, you can visit the Wool and Fashion Tourist Center to learn more about it. With an aperitif at the bar, you'll end the day nicely. Hotel Verviers has an extraordinary number of local beers on the menu. There's even Wohrmann's Beer, a craft beer concocted by hotel director Marco Wohrmann and his three brothers, all of whom also run a Van der Valk Hotel in Wallonia.
