Autumn 2021 was the time: the new construction of Hotel Den Haag-Wassenaar started. With an excavator Jack Luiten symbolically dug the first hole. He and his wife Corine ran the hotel for almost fifty years and passed the baton to their nephew Alex Luiten and his wife Roxanne. Now the completely renovated hotel is on display. 'Last fall we opened in phases,' Alex explains. 'First of all, 134 additional hotel rooms were commissioned. We now have 225 rooms, more than doubling our capacity. Extra special are the Wellness suites with a sauna, jacuzzi and roof terrace. Thanks to the different room types, there is something for everyone; for example, there is an Executive room with walk-in closet, dressing table and free-standing bathtub. The Superior Triple rooms have a full third bed and the Family rooms with two separate bedrooms, sitting area and spacious bathroom are ideal for families with children.'

OPEN KITCHEN

With its perfect location near both the city and nature, the hotel is attractive for both a relaxing night out and a business meeting. The hotel is located on a main road, which has made it a popular stopover for lunch or dinner for decades. Since the reopening, you can do that in the new restaurant Eiber. The space is decorated in a homely manner with warm colors such as terra and dark green, referring to the natural surroundings. Roxanne says: "We wanted to bring the outside in. So you see wallpaper with a plant and tree print. In restaurant Eiber, the open kitchen is a real eye-catcher. There our dedicated kitchen team prepares the dishes before your eyes. We are also pleased with Clubroom Kievit, a special space for drinks, private dining or meetings.' In addition, thirteen new rooms have been realized for meetings or events. These can be arranged flexibly and linked together for large parties or conferences.

The interior reflects the scenic environment

TREES AND BIRDS

Not only in the interior you see the reference to nature, also for the names of the rooms various tree species and birds from the area were chosen. Roxanne explains, "We are so beautifully located here near various nature reserves, such as Het Haagse Bos, Meijendel, Wassenaarse Slag and Koninklijke Landgoederen De Horsten. Restaurant name Eiber refers to the symbol of the city of The Hague: the stork. Gastrobar Hop refers to the hoopoe, a species of bird found in this region. In this hotel bar with cozy seating, we offer shared dining, with Mediterranean and Asian dishes to share. Of course you can also enjoy a drink. Be sure to try our Haags Duifje, a flavorful beer brewed especially for us!' That beer comes from brewery Kompaan in The Hague, one of the hotel's collaborations with local entrepreneurs.

Hotel The Hague-Wassenaar has many regular guests who were looking forward to the reopening. 'The reactions are mostly heartwarming,' says Roxanne. 'Everyone is pleasantly surprised. That already starts upon arrival, because the appearance of the building has been considerably refreshed by the zinc roof and the white and red bricks. In addition, the courtyard garden adds more color to the place. When you step inside, the imposing reception desk impresses. In the new lobby you also feel welcome by the delightful smell of freshly baked delicacies. At the counter of bakery Koekoek, sandwiches, homemade cakes and coffee are available. Ideal to take to the hotel room or for on the road.'

EYE FOR SUSTAINABILITY

According to the enthusiastic management couple, the overall picture of the hotel is right. Alex: "It is appreciated by many guests that the country style has remained. We created a new block of rooms next to the existing building and deliberately didn't go further up. It still has the friendly look of the former Bijhorst, the way it once started here. The hotel has a long history and I find it very special to be able to work here. I am also proud that we managed to renovate with sustainability certification. For example, the hotel is completely off gas, has solar panels and we process food waste into biogas. Completely renewed and ready for the future!
