For Wendy van der Valk , being in charge of the hotel where she walked around as a little girl remains special. That the major renovation of the hotel, which is such an important place for the family, is now as good as finished makes it even more special. Wendy explains, "In 1968 my grandfather Gerrit and grandmother Toos opened Hotel Nuland. To keep up with the times, the desire for a major renovation had been there for a long time. Five years ago we finally started. Because more demolition had to take place than originally thought and because of the corona pandemic, everything was much delayed. At the end of 2022 we were as good as finished, but then, unfortunately, a fire occurred and the opening had to be postponed for several months.'

FROM ZERO TO ZEROAND

In creating the building plans, history was taken into account. 'We must never lose sight of the thinking. We also call that "From zero to Nuland." We compiled that information about the history, complete with years, so that our staff can inform guests about the special history of this place. It was my grandparents who once started here, and when we renovated it, I thought it would be nice to honor them. Therefore, among other things, there is a mural of my grandfather with the tulip named after him and grandma with her "Toos rosé. Also in the hotel bar you can see a family portrait of their family with seven children. Bar1862 "De Gouden Leeuw" refers to the family's very first restaurant, where it all once began in Voorschoten. The twelve new rooms have also been given names with dates and hotel names of the first Van der Valk Hotels.

At Gerrit's restaurant, you can enjoy fine dining. 'We have Gerrit's classics and dishes of today, such as sushi and an extensive high tea. You can also cook your own steak on a stone at your own table. Children also get plenty of attention, so they can help cook on weekends during the Live Cooking brunches. Inside the restaurant, you're also really cozy. I really like the many lamps in all kinds of colors. Actually, you can see an eye-catcher in every room. The details really finish it off. For example, the bar has a large wooden element, as if a tree is growing, fantastic right? At the end of May, another block of rooms with 32 new suites will be completed. 'Among them are themed suites, such as a cinema suite and a green suite full of plants. We are unpacking with facilities you don't have at home. Next year the new fitness and spa will open, with a large whirlpool on the roof terrace. In addition, we plan to build a new room building at the back with 93 rooms and 30 apartments. We are not quite finished yet, it will only get more complete here!

CENTRAL PLACE

Looking back, the years of remodeling were intense, but Wendy could count on a great team. Daniela van der Valk took charge of the interior design. 'I find it very clever how she envisioned everything and made the right choices. Even when things went differently than planned. She did a fantastic job. I also think it's great that other family members often came to help; they were grouting tiles, carrying tables and unpacking chairs. Many family members grew up here; this remains our family's central place. It's great to hear that guests like everything so much and that they stress that the homey feeling and warm atmosphere have been retained. Although I am most pleased that Grandma likes the renovated hotel so much. She is really incredibly proud.
